The Gadgets Shop: Exploring the Technology Behind QD-OLED Displays

Updated: Jan 29

The OLED TV market is growing and expanding at a faster rate with a slew of companies currently at the forefront of developing QD-OLED (Quantum-Dot Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs.

These companies are setting the standard for QD-OLED TV design, production, and marketing.

Compared to regular OLED and LCDs that are commonly used by most consumers. QD-OLED TV provides better color accuracy, more brightness, and a broader color spectrum.

The Best QD-OLED TVs Around.

Samsung is known to be at the forefront of the research and production of TV displays, no wonder they're one of the major players in the QD-OLED TV market.

The company has established itself as a global leader in the space with its cutting-edge designs and creative technologies, providing a variety of high-end, feature-rich models.

The OLED TV market is growing and expanding at a faster rate with a slew of companies currently at the forefront of developing QD-OLED (Quantum-Dot Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs.

Consequently, LG is also out there as a significant player in the QD-OLED TV market. For many years, the company has been a leader in the development of OLED displays. As a substantial key player in the industry, the company has focused more on quality, performance, and design while providing a variety of devices that are both fashionable and high-performing.

Other significant participants in the market to mention are TCL, Hisense, and BOE Technology Group.

Each of these companies trying to create cutting-edge technologies are all well-positioned to have a significant impact on how the market develops in the future.

Samsung Investment in QD-OLED TVs.

Earlier this year, Samsung announced that the company is planning to expand its number of panels with the technology it produces by 50%. According to UBI Research, the company intends to raise the amount of QD-OLED panels it produces from 30,000 per month to 45,000 by 2024.

Meanwhile, Samsung QD-OLED panels are only available in three sizes: 55 inches, 65 inches, and the newly launched 77-inch model.

In contrast, the conventional OLED panel manufacturer LG Display, which supplies nearly all of the finest OLED TVs now in the market, has now reportedly stopped investing in manufacturing for the year 2023. As a result, it is projected that the cost of standard OLED TVs will remain stable, providing the QD-OLED version the opportunity to reduce prices so it can catch up with the global market share in QD display TVs.

How Affordable Are QD-OLED TVs?

From the various tests and results carried out by experts, it is obvious that the QD-OLED TV has a better performance rating than the OLED TVs. The expense of TVs with these panels is presently the main barrier to their widespread use.

Based on the current price of the Samsung S95C, it appears that the first TV with a 77-inch QD-OLED screen will be more expensive than the comparable LG G3 flagship TV.

As it appears, only Sony has switched to employing QD-OLED panels in its 4K TVs.

However, from the most recent developments and news reports, it appears some other household names will also embrace the technology in the years to come.

Because of the economy of scale, Samsung is prepared in producing more products at a lower cost per unit while still turning a profit. Therefore, when additional companies, like TCL, join the QD-OLED party, prices will continue to drop as a result of price competition amongst these TV manufacturers.

What To Expect From Other OLED TVs.

At CES 2023, a wide variety of new TCL TVs was on display, with the company's Q series models topping the selection.

These come in a variety of sizes, from 50 inches to a massive 98 inches, and are packed with technologies like quantum dots and mini-LED backlights. The company claims that its highest spec does have the most full-array local dimming zones ever packed into a consumer display.

The QM8 series is at the top of TCL's range. The model comes with a mini-LED Ultra backlight that produces two times the peak brightness and five times as many local dimming zones as the company's 2022 mini-LED TVs. The TV is set to be available in screen sizes ranging from 65 inches to 98 inches.

In fact, QM8 series has the most dimming zones ever in a 4K or 8K mini-LED TV, which is up to 2,300.

In addition to the Google TV smart interface and a built-in subwoofer, QM8 series sets are native 120Hz versions.

The Q7 series from TCL includes mid-range TVs with a quantum dot layer for improved color and brightness.

These screens, which range in size from 55 to 75 inches, include a full array of LED lighting with local dimming.

A native 120Hz display, VRR, and FreeSync Premium Pro are included in the gaming capabilities, and Google TV has a voice remote and hands-free voice control on the Smart TV front.

The TCL's low-cost quantum dot product range is known to be 66% brighter than a typical, non-QLED display.

The least of the series, which is the Q6, offers gaming features like VRR and Free Sync Premium Pro while being native 60Hz devices. Screen sizes start at 50 inches and up.

Later in 2023, it is expected that QD-OLED TVs will also be included in the TCL portfolio.

There are few details on the new models currently, but we anticipate that they will come in screen sizes of at least 55 and 65 inches, and maybe the enormous 77-inch size as well.

The Battle Between Sony and Samsung QD-OLED TVs

The war on the next-generation QD-OLED TV market has already begun. The Samsung S95B and Sony A95K are two of the most significant TV launches of 2022 since they are the first TVs to make use of the cutting-edge QD-OLED screen.

By offering more brightness, a larger variety of colors, and wider viewing angles, this next-generation technology promises to upend the greatest OLED TVs now on the market. It makes that promise, but will it keep it? And would there be a noticeable difference between these two new technology TVs?

Sony QD-OLED TV Features.

When the A95K was initially introduced in March of last year, Sony made history as the first TV maker to display a QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) TV.

The color reproduction of the Sony A95K instantly stands out, hitting about 100% of the DCI-P3 gamut and roughly 90% of the Rec.2020 gamut.

While experimenting the HDR window maximum brightness, reviewers will utilize an HDR signal that produces a white rectangle on a black background.

Because all the energy is concentrated in that area, the smaller the window, the brighter the TV light that emanates from it. A 10% HDR window (which is often the brightest level) is the 10% size of the screen concurrently; just as a 50% window is 50% of the screen and so on.

The newest Sony A95K 4K TV took home the highest prize at this year's EISA Home Theatre & Display awards. In the competition for "Best Premium OLED TV," Sony's top model defeated Samsung's S95B QD-OLED TV, which came in second.
